Inside, underground

In conversation with the architecture of an art museum buried into the hillside, the works in Inside, underground explore the concept of interior weather. Connected through critical thinking and materials, five Australian artists use scale, architectural forms and environmental matter to frame the complex relationship between body and site.

At the heart of the exhibition is an investigation of raw material and the symbolic and scientific knowledge that it may hold. Made from reimagined plant and animal matter such as beeswax, shells and algae, the sculptures are embedded with environmental data and informed by the artists’ personal experiences of Bundanon. By creating precise spatial encounters inside the museum, the artists in inside, underground generate new forms of material knowledge that reflect our changing relationship with the natural world.
