EXCHANGE VALUE, ‘MY HOUSE IS TOO SMALL’
Exchange Value is a collaborative project by curator and artist Julia Powells and artist Carolyn Eskdale. Eskdale was invited to use the apartment of Powell and her family as a studio over an extended period of time. The apartment was a place in which to inhabit and to work; to research creative actions and to position responses and resulting artefacts within. At times the apartment’s family was involved in works, at others it was only Eskdale exploring her own adjustments to the domestic space.
Extensive documentations were made as photoworks as an active part of the works and as documentations of the exchange. These along with a conversation between the inhabitants reveal the complex interplay between artist and employer, gallery and studio, artwork and everyday action, domestic and public space.
